A small donation can make a massive difference

A charity helping disadvantaged children in Uganda is making a massive difference thanks to the generosity of individuals and companies, such as GIC.

Nkuringo Education and Community Support (NECS) provides education to Ugandan children who otherwise could not attend school and improve their prospects.

NECS was set up by Janet Duchesne and her husband, Steve, after trekking in the Rubona area of Uganda in 2014.

Janet and Steve realised that children do not automatically go to school – although education, even a basic education, is their passport to a better life.

GIC’s £265 donation will enable one young boy – Trever – to attend school for a year, funding his food, board, uniform and mattress.

Before attending boarding school, Trever (nine) lived with his mum in the village of Nyundo. Sadly, his father has recently passed away, meaning Trever would be denied education and would struggle even to be fed.

With GIC’s storeman, Trevor, retiring in July, directors Luke Murphy and Andy Beal decided to make the donation to NECS and keep a Trev on board!

Luke and his wife learned of the charity during a holiday to Uganda in 2018. Today, as well as personally sponsoring two children to attend school, Kate volunteers for the charity.

When NECS was set up, the aim was to have 12 children in education by Christmas. Today, more than 450 children go to school, and new classrooms, dormitories, playgrounds and kitchens have been built. The charity is also providing medical aid to local people.
